Groovelock: Key & BPM · iOS app
Last updated 5 October 2026
The short version: the App Store version of Groovelock collects no data. It uses the microphone only while you are actively listening, analyses the sound on your device in real time, and never records, stores or transmits audio. Beta builds distributed through TestFlight add one optional feedback card; what it sends is described below, and it never includes audio.
Groovelock uses your device's microphone, only while you have pressed LOCK or LIVE, to analyse the music playing around you and estimate its musical key and tempo. The audio is processed in memory on your device in real time. It is never recorded, saved, or sent anywhere.
When you choose a file or a video, the app reads its audio on your device. A temporary copy is kept only while the analysis runs and is deleted when it finishes. Nothing about the file, its name, or its contents is uploaded.
In the App Store version: none. The app has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party services. It does not use any device identifier and makes no network connections.
Builds installed through Apple's TestFlight show a short “How did it do?” card after a reading. Answering is optional; Skip sends nothing. If you tap Send, the app transmits only the following to our server at groovelock.app:
No audio, recordings or file names are ever sent. The data is stored on infrastructure operated by Vercel and Upstash on our behalf, is used only to improve detection, is never sold or shared with anyone else, and is deleted at the end of the beta program or within 30 days of a request to support@groovelock.app (quote the tester code shown on the card). The App Store version contains none of this.
Your settings (appearance, haptics, tempo display and range, wheel labels) are kept in the app's local storage so they are remembered next time. Beta builds also keep a local log of your readings and answers, visible under the BETA tag in the app. None of this leaves the device except as described above, and it is removed when you delete the app.
The App Store version works entirely offline and makes no network connections. Beta builds connect to groovelock.app only when you tap Send on the feedback card. The web version of the app loads two typefaces from Google Fonts, which involves a standard web request to Google's servers; see Google's privacy policy for how they handle such requests.
The app is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone in its App Store version.
If the app ever adds a feature that collects or transmits data, this policy will be updated first and the app will ask for your consent in that feature. Questions: support@groovelock.app.
